When buying a chest freezer, consider:
- Capacity required: do you buy for two or a large family?
- Are you near shopping areas, or do you have to buy in bulk?
- Do you have other freezer space, or will this be your only freezer?
- Location: Where will you put it? Allow sufficient space when measuring and take the measurements with you when you go to look at freezers.
Keep organised!
- Package contents properly using freezer bags or plastic containers and label each package clearly with a description of the contents and the date it was made.
- Keep an inventory checklist on a clipboard near the freezer, so you don’t forget about food you’ve bought.
Some advantages of chest freezers:
- More capacity and can accommodate large and odd sized food items.
- More energy efficient – the cold doesn't escape easily when lid is opened, and foods keep longer.
- Most chest models are manual defrost, so they use less energy.

Did you know?
- Most fridges have a temperature of between 5 and 17 degrees Celsius. An internal dial usually controls the temperature.
- You need to regularly check that your temperature dial hasn’t been changed or moved accidentally otherwise your food could freeze, or spoil if it’s not cold enough.
- If the seals around the doors of your fridge are cracked or torn, cold air can leak out which will use more energy and make it harder for your food to stay cold.
Tips
The ideal fridge temperature is 5°C as bacterial activity is low at this temperature.
When measuring the space needed to put the fridge, remember a fridge needs air space around it. Product brochures and manuals should tell you how much space is required. And check that the fridge can fit through your doorways before you buy!
Consider your shopping habits. If you tend to do one big weekly shop or monthly shop, buying larger packet sizes, you are more likely to need a larger fridge.
Fridges run all the time, so they use a lot of energy. Check the energy rating label – the more stars and the lower kWh per year, the better.
Choose a cool position for your fridge/freezer. Keep it away from direct sunlight or an oven.
Tips for Freezing Food
- Before storing hot foods, be sure to cool them completely.
- Use storage containers designed for the freezer. Airtight containers and ziplock bags are ideal. Freezing in smaller quantities ensures the food freezes quickly.
- Some dishes need to be defrosted before reheating. The safest way to do this is to transfer the container to the fridge the night before or defrost in the microwave.
